The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (had its first year at IIT Delhi and currently functional at its transit campus in Ropar), forms a part of the league along with 15 (7 existing, 8 proposed) other IITs in India.
The seven old IITs are located in Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, and Roorkee. With the plan to setup eight more IITs in the states of Rajasthan, Bihar (Patna), Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad), Himachal Pradesh (Mandi), Orissa (Bhubaneshwar), Madhya Pradesh (Indore), Gujarat (Gandhinagar) and Punjab (Rupnagar), the total number of IITs will be increased to 15.

History
This new institute was established by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) of the Government of India in year 2008. The proposed location for IIT Punjab is Birla seed Farms, Rupnagar, district headquarter of Punjab near to Chandigarh. The classes for academic session 2008-2009 were held at IIT Delhi.
Foundation stone of IIT Punjab was laid down on 24th feb, 2009 by former Union HRD Minister Mr. Arjun singh.
Second year onwards IIT Punjab students has been shifted to its temporary campus (a former women's polytechnic) which is provided by the govt. of punjab. Classes are being held in its temporary campus i.e former women's polytechnic Ropar till its own main campus gets ready. Renovation of temporary campus is going on at pace and IIT Delhi administration had promised to make the campus ready for second year students and coming freshers before the beginning of academic session 2009-2010. Second academic session of IIT Punjab started from 20th of august, 2009. Curriculum for rest of the semesters has been announced to students on the day of their registration.
Location
IIT Ropar is located at Rupnagar (formerly known as Ropar) town of the district Roopnagar. Roopnagar was founded in the 11th century and named after Rup Sen son of Raja Rokeshar. Recent excavations and explorations conducted at Roopnagar indicate that the first settlements here were the Harappans, who reached the upper Satluj towards the close of third millennium B.C. The district has rich historical and religious significance. Roopnagar town, the district headquarters is 42 km. from Chandigarh, the state capital. Roopnagar is well connected by road on National Highway NH-21. The Delhi-Ambala-Una railway line passes through Roopnagar and provides good rail connectivity. The nearest airport is at Chandigarh at a distance of about 60 km. The Satluj river passes close to Roopnagar.
Director
Director for IIT Punjab has been announced by the government of India and the confirmed director is Dr. M. K. Surrapa who was a professor in dept. of metallurgy in IISc Bangalore. He has joined IIT Ropar since the beginning of academic session 2009-2010 at Ropar.
Academic Programs
In its first year, i.e. academic year 2008-2009, three undergraduate programmes were offered. Admission to these programmes is through the JEE and students are admitted after completing 10+2 schooling.

- Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering
- Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering
IIT Ropar also invited admissions for Ph.D. in Mechancial Engg., Electrical Engg., Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Philosophy from 2009 session[1].
