Review

Danny Barrett has one of the most recognizable voices in jazz, and if that sounds like something less than wholehearted praise, then you get extra points for reading carefully. The fact is that Barrett's singing is one of those "love it or hate it" propositions. Those who fondly remember the round, fruity sound of Billy Eckstine will probably resonate immediately to Barrett's almost operatic approach to such fulsome ballads as "Nothing Ever Changes My Love for You" and "Blue Gardenia"; on the other hand, those who prefer a drier, more swinging vocal style will likely get no farther than the first chorus of "Quietly There" before lurching for the "off" button. There's no questioning the man's skill or his taste in songs, and the backing ensemble (which features drummer Billy Drummond and bassist Kenny Davis, among other luminaries) is absolutely top-notch, so there's a strong possibility that you'll love this album. But if at all possible, listen to a track or two before making a financial commitment. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
