It's anti-flash cream and is actually an off-white colour, the old film images gives it a blue tinge. Made from Zinc Oxide it was designed to protect the face from the thermal… flash of explosions. It was also a decent sun-screen too!!! Probably one other reason for using it was the fear factor... any Japanese soldier bumping into a chap with a white face was likely to be startled ridged.
