A synonym for information technology (IT), which is an umbrella term for "information management" and "computer science." The term is more widely used in Canada, Europe and countries other than the U.S. See IT, information management and computer science.

  1. the science concerned with the structure and properties of scientific information, its theory, history, methodology, and organization.
  2. the application of computational and statistical techniques to the management and analysis of information. For example, bioinformatics relates to the management and analysis of biological information; medical informatics to medical information; neuroinformatics to neurobiological data; and chemoinformatics to chemical entities.

Includes on-line access to and editing of data bases, facsimile transmission, optical reading and word processing.
