Review

Although they like to call their style "extreme power metal," in actuality Dragonforce is an honest to goodness prog metal band. If you were to mix the lyrics/subject matter of Dio, the guitar work of Yngwie Malmsteen and Iron Maiden (shredding and twin-guitar harmonies, respectively), impeccable double bass thrash metal drumming, and the vocals of Helloween into one high-calorie metallic cocktail, you'd get Dragonforce. Hailing from London (do all prog metal bands come from Europe?), the quintet sticks to the game plan laid out on its first two releases, as evidenced by 2006's Inhuman Rampage. Admittedly, this sort of genre is certainly not for everyone -- some would say it goes beyond parody -- while some of the song titles sound like rejects from a high school battle of the bands contest ("Revolution Deathsquad," "Operation Ground and Pound," etc.). But for those who regard technique over tunefulness, Inhuman Rampage should be a worthy listen. And here's a challenge for budding prog metallists everywhere -- it may be impossible to play your instrument as technically precise as these lads from London do on "Storming the Burning Fields." A fine soundtrack while playing your next level of World of Warcraft. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Inhuman Rampage is the third studio album by English power metal band DragonForce, the album was released on 9 January, 2006 and 20 June, 2006 in North America. Assumptions have been made[who?] that Frédéric Leclercq was on this album due to the harsh vocals. It is, in fact, Lindsay Dawson who has been on this album[citation needed], performing the harsh vocals. In America, the album reached number 1 in the Billboards Heatseekers chart; it also reached #103 on the Billboard 200 chart; and its first single "Through the Fire and Flames" has received rock radio and Fuse TV airplay, as well as a place as playable track on the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. The album has gone Silver in the UK,[1] has sold over 350,000 units in the US[2] and more than half a million worldwide. A music transcription book was released for the album on 15 September, 2008 by Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation (ISBN 9781423433484).

Production

The recording for the album took place at Thin Ice Studios in Surrey and LamerLuser Studios in London between March and September 2005 and during the recording of "Through the Fire and Flames" guitarist Herman Li snapped one of his guitar strings.[3] Despite this, the band decided to keep this recording and left it on the final album version.[3] It was then mixed at Thin Ice Studios by Karl Groom, Sam Totman, Herman Li and Vadim Pruzhanov and engineered by Karl Groom and Herman Li. The mastering was performed by Eberhard Köhler at Powerplay Mastering in Berlin, Germany.
