Inigo Campioni
Inigo Campioni (born 14 November 1878; died 24 May 1944) was an Admiral in the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina) during World War II.
Campioni was born in Viareggio, Tuscany.
Campioni led several naval groups during the war and reached the grade of Vice-Admiral (Ammiraglio di Squadra). Later he was appointed as governor of the Italian Dodecanese Islands. On 8 September 1943, Campioni was on the island of Rhodes during the armistice between Italy and the Allies.
After several uncertainties that favoured the German occupation, he refused to collaborate with the fascist government of the Italian Social Republic. Brought to Italy, he was condemned to death for High Treason by a Military Tribunal in Parma and shot in May of 1944.
He later received a Gold Medal for Valour in Battle.
