insert-if-absent

Marketing Dictionary: insert-if-absent

Computerized customer file transaction that searches for a record and creates a record if one is not found. This procedure is necessary to process a customer complaint that a product ordered has not been received. The complaint is considered an order regardless of whether an order already exists on the file. If the complaint states that the order was paid for, it is treated as a claims-paid complaint. Otherwise, the new record goes on file as an unpaid credit order.
