Equipment necessary to prepare large volumes of mail that would take too long to prepare by hand. It inserts various mailing package components into an outer envelope at a rate of about 2500 envelopes an hour. Inserters are limited by the number of pockets they have that hold and feed each component to be inserted, averaging four to six pockets. The components are inserted in pocket sequence. The inserter can also seal and meter the envelope. It cannot fold components or put (nest) one component inside another. Each component must be ready for insertion prior to being loaded into the inserter. If more components are being used than there are pockets, some may be nested inside others before loading onto the inserter. However, the components must be thin enough to fit easily inside the outer envelope; inserters cannot insert tight-fitting components. Some inserters also have attachments for inserting special items such as miniature pencils.
