Institute for Supply Management

The Institute for Supply Management in Tempe, Arizona, is a not-for-profit United States association for the benefit of the purchasing and supply management profession, particularly in the areas of education and research.

It was founded in 1913 as the New York Association of Purchasing Management after a purchasing meeting organized by the Thomas Register. It was established in 1915 as the National Association of Purchasing Management. In May 2001 the membership of NAPM voted to change the national association's name to the Institute for Supply Management. Many regional affiliates retain the NAPM name (for example, NAPM San Diego). The name change was in recognition of the expansion of roles by professionals in the field beyond buying to also include activities involving such things as transportation, total costs of ownership, global sourcing, product/service innovation, and more.

The ISM publishes the monthly publication Inside Supply Management, which includes the purchasing surveys Manufacturing ISM Report on Business and the Non-Manufacturing ISM Report on Business, which debuted June 1998.

The ISM releases its popular Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) on the first business day of each month. This can be found under "ISM Reports On Business" on the ISM home page, or directly on this page.

The ISM supports the Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) Program.
