insulin rebound

Food and Fitness: insulin rebound

rebound hypoglycaemia

A physiological response to eating too much sugar. The resulting high blood sugar causes an exaggerated insulin response so that the blood glucose level, after initially rising, actually falls to a level lower than it was before eating the sugar. Thus, less glucose than normal is available to respiring muscles. Insulin rebound can be exacerbated by alcohol, for example, drinking gin and tonic can cause a marked abnormal hypoglycaemia.

Top

A physiological response caused by ingesting too much sugar. Blood glucose levels rise quickly and induce an exaggerated insulin response that overcompensates for the rise, and causes the blood sugar level to fall to a level lower than it was before sugar ingestion. Although not everyone experiences insulin rebound, athletes should not consume simple carbohydrates during the period 15-45 min before an activity because it may cause hypoglycaemia, which could accelerate the onset of muscle fatigue. Carbohydrates consumed during or a few minutes before an exercise does not lead to hypoglycaemia.
