A neurological term meaning an increase in tremor, especially of the arms and hands, when close to picking up or manipulating objects. It is associated with various neurological disturbances, and is probably due (in engineering terms) to increasing the gain of the servo-control systems of the limbs, mediated by the gamma-efferent system: a small error in position (for example, when picking something up with the hand) produces an over-correction so that the hand overshoots; this is over-corrected in its turn to produce an oscillation, or tremor. It is common, though not inevitable, in Parkinson's disease.

Intention tremor is a dyskinetic disorder consisting of wide tremor during voluntary movements. The tremor worsens when a person is moving. It is the result of dysfunction of the cerebellum, in particular of the cerebellar hemispheres ("cerebro-cerebellum"), and is therefore part of the characteristic symptoms of cerebellar ataxia.

There is a very wide differential diagnosis of etiologies affecting the cerebellum, which include medical drugs, alcohol intoxication, focal lesions (including multiple sclerosis, stroke, and tumors). Primary cerebellar disease is relatively uncommon.

Intention tremor is not to be confused with a resting tremor as seen in Parkinson's disease.
