In a coordinate system, the distance from the origin to the point at which a line or curve intersects an axis. For example, the y -intercept is the value a of the dependent variable y in the formula y = a + bx when x is zero. In a cost - volume formula , a is interpreted as the fixed cost portion of a mixed cost.
