Interlace

Art Encyclopedia: Interlace

Design that creates an illusion of strands, ribbons or the limbs and bodies of animals passing over and under each other. With the exception of the reef knot (a universal motif by virtue of the symbolism of joining and uniting), most interlacing designs do not portray real cords, plaiting or knotting and have no symbolic meaning.
