International Museum of Photography, at George Eastman House, Rochester, New York. Formerly the residence of the industrialist and philanthropist George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak, it opened in 1949 as an independent museum and educational institution. It comprises Eastman's restored colonial-revival mansion and gardens, galleries, a research centre, and cinemas. It houses a collection of over 400, 000 images, and one of the largest collections of photographic technology and equipment in the world, both dating from the invention of photography to the present day. In addition to expanding these holdings and organizing exhibitions, the museum conducts important research on photographic conservation.
