Computer Desktop Encyclopedia: Internet Alliance

(Internet Alliance, Washington, DC, www.internetalliance.org) A membership association dedicated to promoting the Internet as the global marketplace for the 21st century. Its goal is to provide a consistent message to state and federal government that enables the Internet to benefit the mass market rather than special interest groups. Originally founded in 1981 as the Videotex Industry Association (VIA), it later became the Interactive Services Association. In 1998, it was renamed the Internet Alliance.

Trade group operating as a subsidiary of the direct marketing association. The IA developed voluntary Internet privacy practices in conjunction with the DMA. Its mission is to promote consumer confidence in the Internet by working to ensure consumer privacy, protecting minors, and monitoring content regulations.
