Interstate 59 travels southwest-northeast through the U.S. state of Alabama, serving Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden, and many smaller places. The interstate also enters the extreme northwestern corner of Georgia, terminating at Interstate 24 in Dade County, Georgia. Much of the route is four lanes with the exception of the portion north of Tuscaloosa to Interstate 459 to 6 lanes and from Exit 119 to Exit 131 where it is six and eight lanes through the Birmingham area.
