Within the U.S. state of New York, Interstate 90 spans miles ( km) from the Pennsylvania border at Ripley to the Massachusetts border at Canaan. Although most of the route is part of the tolled New York State Thruway, two segments, both serving major metropolitan areas, are toll-free expressways. The first, located in Western New York, is a toll-free portion of the Thruway serving downtown Buffalo, while the second, situated in the Capital District and not part of the Thruway system, links Albany and its eastern suburbs.
I-90 has a complete set of auxiliary Interstates within New York, with all but three located in either Buffalo or Rochester.
For most of its length in New York, I-90 runs parallel to the Erie Canal, U.S. Route 20 and the CSX railroad mainline that traverses the state.
See New York State Thruway, mainline exits 61 to 24.
