Great Britain and Ireland (1900–1920)

Ireland has been represented as an independent state at the Summer Olympic Games since 1924 in Paris. From 1900 to 1920, Irish athletes competed as part of the Great Britain team as part of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. An attempt was made in 1906 to gain "separate nation" status but was stopped by Prince George of Greece and Denmark. After most of the island gained independence in 1922, Ireland has competed as its own team since 1924, where it competed under the name Irish Free State. It undertook the present name after the country changed its official name to Ireland in 1937.

Athletes from Northern Ireland can choose to compete for either the Ireland team or the UK team (which competes under the name Great Britain), per an agreement between the Olympic Council of Ireland and the British Olympic Association.[citation needed]

Medalists (23)

This list does not include Irish medalists that competed for Great Britain from 1900 to 1920, such as the silver medal team in field hockey at the 1908 Summer Olympics. It also does not include Irish-born medalists that represented other nations, such as John Jesus Flanagan, who won the gold medal in the hammer throw three times from 1900 to 1908.
