Iroquois

Place Names: Iroquois
  • Location: Canada, USA
In both Ontario, Canada, and South Dakota, USA, the cities are named after the North American tribe. Iroquois is said to come from hiro 'I have said' and koue 'joy' or 'sorrow' depending on the speed with which it is spoken. Another translation is 'Real Adders'. US Army helicopters are named after Native American tribes and the name Iroquois was given to the ubiquitous HU-1 (redesignated in 1962 as the UH-1), built by Bell Helicopters and more commonly known as the 'Huey'.
