Irrational Games was founded and an independent development studio in 1997, by a group of experienced game designers. Its first release, a follow-up to Looking Glass Studio's System Shock, earned critical acclaim, and its first original project, Freedom Force, was also well received. Irrational Games continued to bolster its reputation for having an ability to creatively reinvigorate established properties, with the sequels SWAT 4 and Tribes: Vengeance. In January of 2006, it was announced that the developer had been acquired by Take 2 Interactive; SEC filings later showed that the purchase had been completed in August 2005, for cash, stock, advances, and deferred considerations valued at about 11.8 million dollars. Irrational Games has offices in Boston, MA and Braddon, Australia. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide
