ISO 3166-2:FR is the entry in ISO 3166-2, part of the ISO 3166 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which defines codes for the names of the principal subdivisions of France (whose ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code is FR).
Currently the following subdivisions are assigned codes:
- In metropolitan France, two levels of subdivisions are assigned codes:
- 22 metropolitan regions — Each code is a letter (A–V, in alphabetical order, except for Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie, whose prefixes "Basse-" and "Haute-" are ignored).
- 96 metropolitan departments — Each code starts with FR-, followed by two digits, with two exceptions (Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse) whose second character is a letter instead. This is the INSEE code of the department, which is currently used in the postal codes of France, and until 2009, the vehicle registration plates of France, whose assignment is based on the following:
- 01–89 (except 20): departments created before the 20th century, in alphabetical order (prefixes in the form of "Bas-" and "Haute-" are ignored), except Paris and Yvelines, which replaced the former departments Seine and Seine-et-Oise respectively after the reorganization of the Paris region in 1968
- 90: Territoire de Belfort (given department status in 1922)
- 91–95: departments created after the reorganization of the Paris region in 1968
- 2A and 2B: departments created after the division of Corsica in 1975, whose INSEE code was 20
- In overseas France, two sets of subdivisions are assigned codes:
- 4 overseas regions/departments — Each code consists of two letters, which is also its ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code.
- 1 dependency and 8 overseas territorial collectivities — Each code starts with FR-, followed by two letters, which for the overseas territorial collectivities, is also its ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code (for the dependency, this corresponds to its reserved alpha-2 code in ISO 3166-1).
The four overseas regions/departments and the eight overseas territorial collectivities are also assigned their own country codes in ISO 3166-1, and have separate entries in ISO 3166-2 (see the section Subdivisions included in ISO 3166-1).
