A weight-training device that produces a movement, controlled either hydraulically or electronically, at a constant velocity. It is designed to keep the speed of movement of the muscles being exercised constant, irrespective of the force being applied. Theoretically, this enables a well-motivated individual to contract the muscles at maximum force at all points in the range of motion. Exercises on isokinetic machines help to develop uniform strengthening of active muscles, improving muscle strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. See also isokinetic action.
