Israel Angell
Angell, Israel (1740-1832) Revolutionary army officer, born in Providence, Rhode Island. Angell was colonel of the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment at the battles of Brandywine (1777) and Monmouth (1778). Under Gen. Nathanael Greene, Angell won distinction for bravery and skill under fire at the battle of Springfield (June 23, 1780). Angell and Maj. Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee commanded 1, 000 Continental troops and militia in an effort to stop the advance of 5, 000 British and Hessian troops toward the Rahway River, until forced to withdraw.
