Dictionary of Dance: István Herczog
 

Herczog, István (b Budapest, 1943). Hungarian-German dancer, choreographer, and director. He studied at the State Ballet Institute in Budapest, graduating in 1962, and between 1966 and 1991 he danced in various German companies including Stuttgart Ballet, Bavarian State Opera Ballet, and Düsseldorf Ballet. He created his first ballet, 6th Symphony, set to Shostakovich's score, in 1980, and between 1988 and 1991 he was ballet director and chief choreographer for Dortmund Opera, creating full-length versions of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and Delibes's Coppélia. In 1992 he was appointed director and chief choreographer of the Pécs Ballet in Hungary.
