István Thomán (1862 - 1940) was a Hungarian piano virtuoso and music educator. He was appointed by Franz Liszt to teach at the Royal Hungarian Academy of Music in Budapest (now the Franz Liszt Academy of Music).[1] István Thomán was a notable piano teacher, with students including Ernő Dohnányi, Georges Cziffra, and Béla Bartók. Thomán's six-volume Technique of Piano Playing is still in use today. [2]
Early Life and Education
Thomán was born in Homonna, Kingdom of Hungary (today Humenné, Slovakia) in 1862 to Jewish parents, Dr. David Thomán and Rosa Weisberger. [3] Recognized for his talent, he became a favorite student of Franz Liszt.[2]
