German Literature Companion:

'Jägers Abendlied'

‘Jägers Abendlied’, a poem written by Goethe late in 1775 or early in 1776. It was printed with this title in Goethes Schriften in 1789, but the original version, published in Der teutsche Merkur in 1776, bore the superscription ‘Jägers Nachtlied’. The restless love it expresses refers either to Lili Schönemann or, more probably, to Charlotte von Stein. The poem has been set to music by F. Schubert.
