Works: Works by J. Hartley Manners
(1870-1928)

1912Peg o' My Heart. Manners's comedy about a poor Irish girl who comes to live with her haughty relatives proves to be one of the most popular plays on the American stage. Closing after 603 performances, it is the longest-running nonmusical play in Broadway history up to that time. Laurette Taylor would perform the role of the Irish waif more than a thousand times, typecast by it until her appearance as Amanda in Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie (1945). Manners was a London-born former actor who came to the United States in 1902 as a member of the cast of his own play, The Crossways. His other works include Zira (1905), The Harp of Life (1916), and Out There (1917).

John Hartley Manners (10 August 1870 – 19 December 1928)[1] was a London-born playwright of Irish extraction who wrote Peg o' My Heart, which starred his wife, Laurette Taylor on Broadway in one of her greatest stage triumphs. He wrote the 1922 silent screen adaptation of Peg o' My Heart which starred Laurette. The 1932 sound remake starring Marion Davies was adapted from Manners play as Manners had died in 1928. Manners also wrote two 1924 silent film screenplays which starred his wife in her only two other motion picture appearances, Happiness adapted from his play, and One Night in Rome. The latter his wife particularly enjoyed and kept a personal print to run over and over for guests.

Peg o' My Heart, a comedy, played in New York City from December 20, 1912 to May 30, 1914.[2] It afterward had a long run in London. Manners' other plays include:

  • The Crossways, in collaboration with Lillie Langtry
  • As Once in May
  • The Queen's Messenger
  • Zira, with Henry Miller
  • The Majesty of Birth
  • Ganton & Co.
  • The Girl and the Wizard
  • The Prince of Bohemia
  • The Girl in Waiting
  • A Woman Intervenes

He published Peg o' My Heart in 1913, and Happiness and Other Plays, including Just as Well and The Day of Dupes in 1914. [2]

He died of esophageal cancer in New York City, aged 58.
