Trivia
He enjoyed a lengthy career at the highest level, playing primarily as a centre back in the German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and for Germany. He was famed for his defensive perception, physical strength and prowess in the air. However, Kohler ended his career on a sad note by getting sent-off and directly causing Dortmund to concede a penalty in the UEFA Cup final against Feyenoord. On 15 July 2009 announced his comeback he played now for Alemannia Adendorf in the Kreisliga C and lived in Grafschaft[2].
Coaching Career
After his playing career was over, he has managed the German under-21 side, and became sports director of Bayer Leverkusen on March 31, 2003, quitting this post on June 29, 2004. On December 17, 2005, he was appointed the coach of MSV Duisburg. On August 28, 2008, Kohler signed a three-year contract as manager of German 3rd Liga club VfR Aalen. However on November 16, 2008 he retired from the Head Coaching job and works last as Director of Sports, who was left on 05 May 2009[3], due to a heart condition.
On August 31, 2006, he reportedly turned down the opportunity to coach the Ivory Coast national team.
