Works by
(1821-1875)J. Ross Browne
| 1846 | Etchings of a Whaling Cruise, with Notes of a Sojourn on the Island of Zanzibar; with a History of the Whale Fishery. Browne's first book is an account of his sea travels to Zanzibar in 1842-1843 on the whaling ship Bruce. The work wins critical recognition and would influence Melville's writing of Moby-Dick. Browne served as official reporter for the first Constitutional Convention in California in 1849. |
| 1864 | Crusoe's Island: A Ramble in the Footsteps of Alexander Selkirk, with Sketches of Adventure in California and Washoe. A popular narrative of Browne's experiences as a custom house and Indian affairs inspector and as a mines commissioner. The autobiographical sketches are embellished with fictional elements and are said to anticipate Mark Twain's Roughing It. |
