Personal physician to the Buddha and to the kings Bimbisāra and Ajātaśatru. He studied medicine for seven years in Taxila, and on his return became wealthy by curing several influential patients. After he became a stream-winner (śrotāpanna) he donated a mango grove in Rājagṛha known as the Jīvakambavana to the Saṃgha and built a monastery (vihāra) there.
