Cole, Jack (b New Brunswick, NJ, 27 Apr. 1911, d Los Angeles, 17 Feb. 1974). US dancer and choreographer. He studied with St Denis and Ted Shawn in New York and performed with Shawn's Men Dancers in 1933, and later with the Humphrey-Weidman company. In 1936-7 he toured with his own group on the nightclub circuit and he continued to dance in clubs for more than 30 years. He created Hindu Serenade for the Ziegfeld Follies of 1942 and choreographed several Broadway musicals, including Magdalena (1948), Kismet (1953), and Jamaica (1957), while he directed and choreographed Donnybrook! and Kean in 1961. He choreographed the original Broadway productions of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962) and Man of La Mancha (1965). In Hollywood he helped to train dancers for screen musicals, and he choreographed the film On the Riviera (1951). Among the stars he coached were Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable, and Marilyn Monroe. He choreographed Requiem for Jimmy Dean (1968) for the Harkness Ballet. In all, he worked on 30 films and 20 musicals.
