Jack Russin

Artist: Jack Russin
  • Genres: Jazz
  • Instrument: Piano

Biography

This pianist, whose surname sometimes appears shorn of one "s," plays on a respectable pile of sides involving the sort of sounds that would be comfortable to fans of music from the so-called "good old days." Be it vintage vocal groups such as the Boswell Sisters, crooning sensation Bing Crosby, or traditional jazz combos, Jack Russin was there on the piano bench and often contributing arrangements as well as straightforward harmonic accompaniment.

Documentation of Russin in the syncopated arts includes historic sessions with groups such as the Louisiana Rhythm Kings and Red McKenzie & His Mound City Blue Blowers. The totality of this performer's discography amounts to a wee thimbleful compared to his brother, a reed player born an Irving but transformed into Babe Russin on-stage. The latter artist has attracted a great deal more attention as well in terms of biographical research. There is another musically talented member of this family, the pianist known as both Sunny Russo and Sunny Russin. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
