Biography

With his siblings, Tito Jackson, Michael Jackson, Jermaine Jackson and Marlon Jackson, Jackie Jackson was part of the famous 70s group, the Jackson 5. Jackie Jackson was the co-lead singer along with his brother Michael Jackson.

Born Sigmund Esco Jackson in 1951 in Gary, Indiana, Jackie Jackson began recording and playing with his brothers at an early age. He used to sneak his father's guitar and practiced with his brothers every chance he got. At the age of 12 when his father finally realized the boys were using his guitar when he wasn't around, Jackie, Michael, Marlon, Tito and Jermaine were given a chance to perform. The group performed in front of their father first who became enthusiastic about the boys' talents and abilities. With encouragement from both parents, the Jackson 5 were ready to make a public appearance. Joe Jackson, their father, worked part time at a mill and full time as the manager of the group.

In 1963 the group won a talent contest singing the Temptations' hit "My Girl." Their first professional debut was a local nightclub in Indian called Mr. Lucky's. Keith Gordon, the owner of the only recording studio in Gary, Indiana decided to give the quintet a shot. In 1967 the group produced the song "Big Boy" on the Steeltown label. By the summer of 1968 after opening for the likes of Jerry Buffer, the Chi-Lites and Little Miss Soul, the Jackson 5 were on their way to Detroit to make an even bigger name for themselves.

Between 1969 and 1970 the quintet became a household name on the Motown circuit, producing on the Motown record label. Along with their harmony and rhythm, the group choreographed their numbers. The quintet became a singing and dancing sensation with number one hits "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There." They capitalized on their success with lunch boxes and a Saturday morning cartoon show depicting the boys. The first hit, "I Want You Back," soared instantly to number one and sold more than two million copies.

After successfully recording 13 albums, the group felt a need to move on. Because they played Motown for so long, the transition wasn't easy. Motown owned the name Jackson 5 so when the group signed with Epic Records in 1976, the became the Jacksons. Jermaine Jackson had decided to stay on with the Motown record label so Randy Jackson was brought in to replace him. Despite their successes, the Jackson 5 split to pursue solo interests.

Jackie Jackson was known as the co-lead singer of the both the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons. With his distinguishable high voice, he often led the three other singers. In the hit "Love Don't Wanna Lead," he sings with such feeling and one can easily pick out his voice.

Life and career

Jackie was born Sigmund Esco Jackson in Gary, Indiana on his mother's 21st birthday, May 4, 1951. He is the second child of Joseph and Katherine and the oldest male child.[1] He was given the name "Jackie" by relatives. Aspiring to be a professional baseball player, Jackson forsook that dream when he and his 4 younger brothers formed the Jackson 5 in 1964. His older sister Rebbie didn't take part. Jackie and his two younger brothers Tito and Jermaine were part of an early incarnation of the group as The Jackson Brothers in 1964.

The Jackson Five

Jackie's role in the Jackson 5 was as the high tenor singer opposite the lead vocals of Michael and Jermaine. His voice can be heard in the finale of I Want You Back singing the lines "Forget what happened then" and "Spare me of this cost". During live performances, he stood beside Michael and Marlon, providing backing vocals and occasionally playing the tambourine. Amid the most successful years for the group, Jackie recorded his first solo album: the self titled "Jackie Jackson". Consisting of ballads in typical Motown fashion, the album showcased Jackie's now familiar high tenor singing style. However, due to lack of marketing interest from Motown, the album did not chart or reach a large audience. As a member of the Jackson 5, Jackie continued to see success throughout the early to mid 1970's.

The Jacksons

In 1975, The Jackson 5 became "The Jacksons" when they moved from Motown to CBS. CBS offered the brothers the creative control Motown did not. Along with the move came the addition of younger brother Randy and the departure of Jermaine (who stayed with Motown as a solo artist). With the change in lineup and creative freedom Jackie took a more active role in the group: filling Jermaine's shoes as a lead singer alongside Michael and writing original material for the first time. During these years Jackie also dropped the high tenor voice he was known for and sang in a more natural and soulful style. The first two albums as The Jacksons were not as successful as their past Jackson 5 releases, even with a syndicated TV show to promote them.

However, The Jacksons 1978 album Destiny put them back into the charts with the hit single Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground). Two years later The Jacksons followed up Destiny with another successful album Triumph, featuring Jackie's first solo song in the group Wondering Who as well as co-writing the single Can You Feel It.

In 1984 the brothers released Victory, which saw the return of Jermaine and a more limited contribution from now-superstar Michael. Again, Jackie took the lead with the song Wait as well as writing the single, "Torture". Victory became a hugely successful album and tour.

In the years that followed the brothers would go their separate ways after recording a final album in 1989, 2300 Jackson Street. Michael and Marlon were very distant from the album leaving Jackie, Jermaine, Tito and Randy to record and promote 2300 Jackson Street as a four-piece. In the same year Jackie released his second solo album Be the One. Although a bigger success than his previous Motown release, Be the One still failed to reach a large audience. Jackie did not reunite with his brothers again until 2001, when he took part in the Michael Jackson's 30th Anniversary show.

Current years

Jackie currently lives in California where he runs the record company, Jesco. Artists signed to the label include rapper Mike Street and Jackie's own son Sigmund Esco "Siggy" Jackson, Jr. (aka DealZ), who released his first mixtape in August 2007. On June 25, 2009 Jackie's brother Michael Jackson died after suffered cardiac arrest at his home at 2:26 pm (PDT).

Jackie is also the mentor of young up and coming recording artist and performer, Donny B. Lord, aka D.B.L. D.B.L. Official Website Jackie has been grooming the young performer since being a member of the boy group "MIXX" that Jackie created and produced years ago, giving D.B.L.'s music a sound that encompasses "the Jackson sound" with his native Caribbean roots.
