"Jackpot" is the sixth episode from the fourth season of the American forensic crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which is set in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Plot summary
When Dr. Robbins receives a severed head found by a dog, Grissom goes to Jackpot, Nevada in search of the rest of the body. When he arrives he soon finds out that he cannot expect much help from the locals. Even the sheriff seems to be hiding something. Meanwhile Catherine gets an unexpected gift from her father, in the form of $250,000, which she flatly refuses. The body that was missing the head was found on a foothill, and that his car is in an old barn owned by the gas station owner. Grissom stays in Jackpot to solve the case, but his field kit gets stolen when he leaves his car to go and find the barn. The sheriff's brother was having a love affair with the man who was found decapitated. The sheriff's nephew saw his father and his college roommate together, and killed his roommate by drugging him and burying him with his head visible. He slashed the victim's cheek to attract wolves, which lead to his head being gnawed off by a dog.
Notes
- George Eads and Jorja Fox do not appear in this episode.
- Fawnskin, CA is the substitute for the town of Jackpot, NV.[1]
- Grissom references "Formicia obscuripes" when inspecting a beetle at an outdoor crime scene. There are two related errata: "Formicia obscuripes" is a corruption of "Formica obscuripes," a species of ant (order Hymenoptera, family Formicinae), whereas the beetle in the episode was a Darkling beetle (order Coleoptera, family Tenebrionidae).
