Biography

The group Jacksoul formed around the middle of the '90s in Toronto, Canada. Members are lead singer and founder Haydain Neale, guitarist Justin Abedin, bassist Dave Murray, keyboardist Brent Setterington, saxophonist Adam Leo, and drummer Roger Travassos. It is Neale, though, with his powerful vocal abilities, that is the driving force behind the group. The music Jacksoul offers fans is a mixture of funk, jazz, soul, and even rock, that makes it hard to label it in one style line of a genre.

In 1996 Jacksoul released its debut album, Absolute. Success came almost instantly, with encouraging reviews pouring in from music critics. A sophomore offering, Sleepless was completed for 2000 under the Vik./BMG label. It was produced by Jon "Rabbi" Levine and carries tracks like "Don't Tell Me," "Never Give Your Love Away," "Let Me Call You Baby," "I Remember," and "I Know What You Want." The lead single, "Can't Stop," from the second album found its way on to the music charts almost over night, helped out some by the exposure the music video for the tune gained the group on MuchMusic, Canada's version of MTV. ~ Charlotte Dillon, All Music Guide

jacksoul, sometimes stylized as jackSOUL, was a Canadian soul and R&B band. Based in Toronto, the band was fronted by singer Haydain Neale, and was best known for their hits "Can't Stop" and "Still Believe in Love".[1]

The band's other members included Davide Direnzo, John Kanakis, Justin Abedin, Ron Lopata, Dave Murray, Brent Setterington, Adam Leo, and Roger Travassos.[2]

Each of the band's albums was nominated for a Juno Award, and the group won the award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year in 2001 and 2007. The band won a Canadian Urban Music Award in 2004.

Neale was involved in a traffic accident on the evening of August 3, 2007, and was sent to hospital. On August 18, 2007, it was reported that Neale had been in a coma since the accident occurred.[3]

On October 1, 2007, jacksoul's official site announced that Neale had been making a very promising recovery to date, although he continued to be in the hospital. On January 30, 2008, a spokesperson for the family reported that Haydain Neale continued to improve since the last statement had been made.

Following his recovery, Neale completed work on the album he had started to work on prior to his accident. On October 26, 2009, the band announced that the album, entitled SOULmate, will be released on December 1, 2009.[4] It will contain 10 new songs written before singer Neale's accident. All profits from the album will go to the Haydain Neal Family Trust.[5]

The first single, "Lonesome Highway", was made available on November 3, 2009.

On November 22, 2009, Haydain Neale died of lung cancer at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital.[6]
