Review
The first single from Tenement Symphony, Jacky finds Almond revisiting two long-standing sources of inspiration, Jacques Brel and Scott Walker, by adapting the latter's cover of the former. Trevor Horn's typically over the top (and successfully so) production throws on splashy strings over a quick techno beat, making for an interesting fusion of past and present, while Almond's delivery is, unsurprisingly, dramatic and entertaining. As for the B-sides, "Deep Night" is an attractive combination of deep house bass, mainstream pop, and some off-kilter, jazz-touched rhythms and keyboards. Almond's portrait of the city in the evening isn't new ground for him, but the slightly playful feeling of the music makes for good results. "A Love Outgrown" features one of the last collaborations with Billy McGee on strings, contributing a great introduction for the sweeping ballad. With lyrical references to Southport, Almond's hometown, it's a gently paced, quite lovely meditation on nostalgia and wanting to escape a go-nowhere situation, with one of his best vocals. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi| Jacky (1987 Album by Jacky Cheung) | |
