( b Le Havre, 19 Nov 1906). French composer. He studied with Boulanger at the Ecole Normale de Musique from 1927, but began composing seriously only in the 1940s. He produced a body of songs distinguished by elegant lines and supple, sophisticated harmony, at the time reckoned second only to Poulenc's.
