Jakob Hermann Obereit

German Literature Companion: Jakob Hermann Obereit

Obereit, Jakob Hermann (Lindau?, 1725-98, Jena?), grew up in Lindau, where he afterwards practised medicine. In 1776 he moved to Winterthur, and in later life he ranged restlessly from place to place. He was a pietistic Christian of mystical bent, but left no writings of importance. He, and not J. J. Bodmer, is the true discoverer of MS. C of the Nibelungenlied.
