(b London, 4 May 1830; d there, 14 Nov 1901). English impresario. From 1861 to 1889 he managed opera seasons intermittently at the Lyceum, Her Majesty's Theatre, Drury Lane and Covent Garden, giving many English premières, including those of Faust, Carmen and La forza del destino.
