Waddell, James Iredell (1824-1886) U.S. and Confederate naval officer. Born in Pittsboro, North Carolina, in 1824, James Iredell Waddell entered the U.S. Navy as a midshipman in 1841. He saw action off Veracruz during the Mexican War (1846-48) and then attended Annapolis, from which he was graduated in 1847. Upon his return from the Far East in 1862, he resigned his U.S. commission and joined the Confederate navy, serving on the Mississippi and on the Atlantic coast. In October 1864, he took command of the Confederate raider CSS Shenandoah in England, and sailed to the Pacific where he destroyed most of the Union whaling fleet. Following the Civil War, Waddell captained commercial vessels.
