James Millander Hanks

James Millander Hanks was a Representative from Arkansas. He was born in Helena, Phillips County, Ark on February 12, 1833 and attended the public schools, the college at New Albany, Ind., and Jackson College, Columbia, Tenn. He studied law and graduated from the University of Louisville in 1855. Hanks was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Helena. He became judge of the first judicial district of Arkansas 1864-1868. Later, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1873). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1872, but instead engaged in agricultural pursuits. He died in Helena, Ark., May 24, 1909; His interment is in Maple Hill Cemetery.
