Biography

James Walker distinguished himself as a member of the Dixie Hummingbirds, an illustrious vocal group from the gospel genre. The still active group has already logged more than 75 years of activity, obviously involving a regular series of membership changes. Walker joined the flock in the early '50s, his background including recording and performing in the Southern Sons. During approximately three decades that followed, Walker enjoyed the expanded opportunities available to the Dixie Hummingbirds -- most notably a spate of background vocal activity in pop music during the '70s and '80s. Walker also sang on recordings by the Golden Gate Quartet and the Harmonizing Four and is credited as the composer of several gospel standards, such as the willing "Touch Me Lord" and the appreciative "Let Us Praise Him." ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
