James West was the second full-time Secretary of Newton Heath; the term 'manager' was not used at Manchester United until the arrival of Jack Robson. He oversaw the collapse and eventual bankruptcy of Newton Heath, followed by the club's re-birth as Manchester United F.C. on 28 April 1902.
