Music Encyclopedia: Jan Adam Maklakiewicz

(b Chojnata, 24 Nov 1889; d Warsaw, 7 Feb 1954). Polish composer. He studied with Statkowski at the Warsaw Conservatory (1922-5) and with Dukas in Paris, then was a conservatory teacher, church musician and critic in Warsaw. His works of 1928-32 make adventurous use of new techniques (Cello Concerto, 1930; Symphony no.2 with baritone and chorus, 1928). The later music is radically simpler (he wrote much church music in the 1930s).
