Jane Child (aka Jane Hyslop) (born 15 February 1967, Toronto) is a Canadian dance-pop singer, producer and musician.

Career

Child is best known for her 1990 hit song "Don't Wanna Fall in Love", which peaked at #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for three weeks in the spring of that year. She was known for her eclectic fashion style, which included spiked hair with long braids and wearing a chain linking a nose ring to an earring.^[1] Her follow-up single, "Welcome to the Real World", was a modest hit, peaking at #49. The song was featured in the 1988 film Married to the Mob. These originated from her self titled debut album, which peaked at #49 on The Billboard 200. In 1992, she contributed a track titled "Mona Lisa Smiles" to the soundtrack of Freejack, a sci-fi action thriller starring Emilio Estevez, which was included on her second album release, Here Not There, one year later. This album was a departure from her debut, in that she mixed standard-issue New jack swing elements along with hard rock tracks, and used outside songwriters on several songs. Because of an illogical single release schedule coupled with limited publicity ("Here Not There" was the first single instead of the energetic Dance-pop song, "Do Whatcha Do"), the record enjoyed only limited success. However, since then, the album has become a favourite, receiving critical acclaim from most who own it. According to Nielsen Soundscan, it reportedly has sold 78,000 worldwide.^{[citation needed]}

Child disappeared from the music scene for several years, but kept herself busy working with obscure bands and Japanese projects. In 1996, she began recording and writing her next album, as well as continuing to work on side projects and playing small gigs. Her third album Surge was released in 2001 via her own website on her own record label. Surge features two singles "Almost Beautiful" and "Nice Day" which have surfaced on some radio and internet radio station playlists. That same year she re-recorded her peace anthem "World Lullabye", included in her first album, and sold the single on her website, all proceeds donated to the Twin Towers Fund. Her last published work was a cover of Tina Turner's "We Don't Need Another Hero" on a Tina Turner tribute album issued in 2004. Jane Child's fourth record, yet to be released, has been completed for years. Jane is as well working on several side projects, including movie soundtracks.

Child has used a variety of synthesisers over the course of her career, most notably the Fairlight CMI III, which appeared in the videos for 'Don't Wanna Fall In Love' and 'Welcome To The Real World". As of the time of the making of the "Surge" album, Jane's equipment list included:

Personal life

Child is married to Cat Gray. Their marriage was not widely known about until Wayne Brady publicly announced it during Child's appearance on The Wayne Brady Show in 2002 where she performed "Words I Know" and "Don't Wanna Fall In Love." Cat is currently the musical director for Wayne Brady's show in residency at the Venetian Hotel and Casino complex, Las Vegas. Pussycatt Doll Kymberly Wyatt has recently remade Jane's signature anthem "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" for a Deluxe Version of their new set "Doll Domination." Her husband Cat is featured on Wayne Brady's latest album A Long Time Coming on the track "I Ain't Moving."
