Biography

Born on October 3, 1969, and raised in Woodland Hills, CA, Janel Moloney trained at State University New York at Purchase, before returning to the West Coast where she continued her studies with Roy London.

She kicked off 1991 with several TV movies before playing small roles in Safe and Wild Bill (both 1995). Genetic affection for the limelight became obvious when she and her aunt, Christine Ebersole, shared the role of Beebee -- each playing the character at a different age -- in 'Til There Was You (1997). The following year, Moloney was featured in Desperate Measures, and also in Bill Kalmenson's The Souler Opposite (co-starring Christopher Meloni), which received positive critical attention as an independent feature. Janel Moloney (born October 3, 1969) is an American actress, best known for her role as Donna Moss on the television series The West Wing.

Personal life

Born in Woodland Hills, California, Moloney is the niece of actress Christine Ebersole, and attended the acting conservatory at SUNY Purchase. During the 2004 U.S. Presidential campaign, Moloney was an active supporter of John Kerry's presidential campaign and made public appearances on its behalf.

Television

Her early work included television guest roles on ER, Sports Night, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. and Murder, She Wrote. In 1999, Moloney became a recurring guest star on The West Wing as Donna Moss, assistant to Deputy White House Chief of Staff Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford). Moloney was originally credited only as a guest star, but she appeared in every episode of the first season. From the second season onward, Moloney was listed in the main credits. Moloney has received two Emmy nominations, one in 2002 and one in 2004, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama.

Moloney has also appeared in the TV film Bang, Bang, You're Dead with Thomas Cavanagh and Randy Harrison, and played the part of Amber Frey in Amber Frey: Witness for the Prosecution, broadcast May 25, 2005 on CBS.

In 2007, Moloney played Dana Chase, an attractive, professional woman who mysteriously struck up a relationship with Tommy Caffee (Jason Clarke) in 6 episodes of the 2nd season of Brotherhood.

In 2008, Moloney appeared in one episode ("It's a Wonderful Lie") of House M.D.. Later, she guest-starred in an episode of 30 Rock.

In 2009, appeared in the US "Life on Mars" as Professor Pat Olsen in the episode Revenge of the Broken Jaw. She also appeared in the episode Faithfully of "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" as Allison Wyler

In 2007, Moloney made her off-Broadway stage debut as Theresa in the Playwrights Horizons production 100 Saints You Should Know, written by Kate Fodor and directed by Ethan McSweeny.

Movies

In 2009, Moloney starred in the feature film Armless, as Anna, who goes to New York City to find her husband John who harbors a dark secret. Armless was an official selection of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival 'Next' category.
