Biography

Costume designer Janet Patterson specializes in 19th century garb. She received an Oscar nomination, a BAFTA Award, and an Australian Film Institute Award for her work on Jane Campion's The Piano (1993). A native of Sydney, Australia, Patterson holds a bachelor of arts degree in Interior Design and a diploma in Costume and Textile Design. She started out as a production designer for television series produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1980 and remained there through 1990. In 1991, Patterson clothed the characters in Gillian Armstrong's The Last Days of Chez Nous. Through the 1990s, Patterson continued working with both Campion and Armstrong, on projects such as the latter's Oscar & Lucinda (1998). ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
