Biography

Tall, outgoing American actress Janis Carter had initially planned to become a concert pianist, but switched her interests to opera while attending Western Reserve University. She worked steadily on Broadway in such musicals as DuBarry Was a Lady and Panama Hattie, the latter musical winning her a 20th Century-Fox contract. Curiously, Janis sang only in her first film, Cadet Girl. Thereafter, she was shunted off to comedy-relief and "other woman" roles. Her best screen performance was as the hard-boiled anti-heroine in the Columbia noir programmer Framed (1947). Janis Carter and the movie industry parted company in 1952, after which she focused her energies upon television; from 1954 through 1956, Janis and Bud Collyer co-hosted the daytime quiz show Feather Your Nest. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Janis Carter (October 10 1913 — July 30 1994) was a film and television actress working in the 1940s and 1950s.

After attending Mather College in Cleveland, Ohio, Carter headed to New York in an attempt to start an opera career. Although her attempt was a failure, she did end up working on Broadway where she was spotted on stage by Darryl F. Zanuck who was impressed by the young actor/singer and signed her to a movie deal.

Carter, after moving to Hollywood, appeared in over 30 films beginning in 1941 for 20th Century Fox, MGM, Columbia, and RKO. She appeared in the films Night Editor (1946) and Framed (1947) with Glenn Ford and the Flying Leathernecks (1951) with John Wayne.

After leaving Los Angeles, Carter returned to New York and found work in television in comedies, dramas, and even as hostess for a quiz show, Feather Your Nest, working with Bud Collyer.[1]
