Jansen Enikel, a citizen of Vienna in the 13th c., wrote two chronicles in his later years (c.1280), the Weltchronik and the Fürstenbuch. Both are written in Middle High German rhyming couplets. The Weltchronik covers, with little political sense and an avid appetite for anecdote, the whole of history from the Creation to the death of the Emperor Friedrich II. The Fürstenbuch, which is unfinished, is a chronicle of Austria and Styria, from the foundation of Vienna onwards. The name Jansen Enikel (modern Enkel) means grandson of Jans or Johannes.
