Biography

With a good eye for fashionably lavish historical garments, it should not come as a surprise that costume designer Janty Yates got her start in the film industry via the fashion industry. From her earliest work as wardrobe assistant on such features as 1981's Quest for Fire and Dance With a Stranger (1985), Yates soon began to serve as costume supervisor (The Commitments), which soon lead to work as costume designer on such antiquity themed films as Plunkett and Macleane (1999) and Gladiator (2000), for which she won the Best Costume Design Oscar at the 2000 Academy Awards. In 2001, Yates designed the wardrobe of everyone's favorite intellectual cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, in director Ridley Scott's Hannibal. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
